It’s a house that’s been built in Hamilton, and you’ll be able to print a lot of things on it when it opens in January.
The house has a print shop, a home office and a printer’s studio.
“We’ve been trying to figure out how to get a print out in Canada, and then we just had to try it,” says co-founder and print house manager Andrew O’Brien.
O’Brian says he’s been doing some online print-outs with a company called Freetrack, which uses its own equipment to create prints in Canada.
But the Hamilton House will print on a lot more machines than the Freetracks do.
“You’re going to have a lot less time to worry about that machine, or that printer,” O’Briens said.
“There’s a lot easier things you can do on the machine.
You don’t have to worry that it’s going to print the wrong way.”
It also makes it easier for people who live in different parts of the country.
“I’m going to be going into the house in Toronto and I’m going, ‘Where can I find a printer to print my business card?'” says O’Connor.
“So if you live in the GTA, I can print my Business Card, and that’s the same as I can on the Hamilton house.”
Hamilton House is one of many new print shops to hit the Toronto scene this year, as Canada expands its print market to include more digital services.
The Toronto Printing Press, for instance, will have a printing shop in the city for the first time.
Other companies are opening up print shops, too, like the Toronto Paper Press, which opened in late August.
“Toronto is kind of a global city.
You can’t really go to Toronto without being a print-shop customer,” says Andrew Ouellette, the head of business development for the Toronto Printing Printer.
“It’s kind of hard to find a print space, and we really want to be part of that.”
The Toronto printing house opened in early August.
Ouelle says the printing shop will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will offer customers a variety of print options, including paper, ink and metal, all of which come with their own print options.
The printing shop has about 50 employees, including staff from both print shops.
Ouedle says it’ll also offer free printing to students.
“Students that are on a budget can print their college work, and if they are on the budget they can print whatever they need, including college stuff,” he said.
Oulette says the print shop is also opening a new print house for students.
The print shop will offer a range of printing options, as well as a variety and range of print services, from printing in-house and online, to creating print-ready portfolios.
“That means we have print shops all over Toronto,” he says.
“And the way we are going to offer them is through our online store.”
The Hamilton House was designed by Ontario-based artist Alex Gebre, who says it’s a reflection of the changing nature of print.
“Print is becoming more and more like a service.
It’s kind in a way like online, and it’s like a book,” he told The Toronto Star.
“When you’re at home, you can print something and it will arrive in your mailbox.”
Gebres also said the house is about creating a space for creative people, and creating a platform for artists to sell their work.
“This is a way for people to make a living doing what they love and to connect with other artists,” he added.
Ouellle says he has no plans to open another print shop in Toronto.
He said Hamilton House’s print shop and online print shop were both designed with print-out in mind.
“Our goal is to build a network of people that have a desire to work together,” he explained.
“The idea behind the Hamilton print shop was that there were people who were willing to do a job for you, and this was the platform that we wanted to be able, through Hamilton House, to help those people to find work.”
The print house is currently located in Hamilton’s downtown.
Oaullle is also looking for more business ideas for the print house.
“Right now, there’s no plans for a second print shop,” he stated.
“But I think the next thing is to create an online space that allows people to print with us, so that we can do more than just a print in-store.”
Hamilton’s print house opens its doors on February 13.
